The Narrow Door: A Memoir of Friendship by Paul Lisicky

5.0

I had so many thoughts and feelings while reading that I know I'll never be able to put them into this review, but I wish I could. This was such a beautiful, quiet look at the moments shared between two people and how those moments grow and build and fall apart and linger. Lisicky has such a lovely way with words; things are at the same time simple and layered. I also really loved the way the narrative moved around in time. On one hand, I felt that it was really reflective of the way memory works, especially when we're trying to find meaning in something. On the other, it felt like such a clear picture of how we become our present selves.

I don't have a lot of room for books in my budget right now, so most of what I read comes from the library. This is one of the rare library reads that I almost immediately knew I was going to have to buy. I want to be able to sit with the language and the story and the emotions.

And on another note, as a writer, this was also a wonderful read. It's the type of book that makes me excited to write and excited about the craft of writing.
