Golden Witchbreed by Mary Gentle

4.0

I first read this more than 30 years ago, read it a couple of times within the few years after that, and then it's just moved house to house with me. I remembered it as being good, and I've recommended it to other people. But finally I reread it after a very long time, and it turns out I remembered correctly. It's good. The writing is strong and nimble and the characters are nicely shades of grey. The Main Character does a bit too much world-wandering and survives a few too many conspiracies but whatever, it's to show off the world building. Which is excellent. I'm glad this book, unlike many I read first as a teenager, holds up well. Glad, too, that the work of moving it a dozen times wasn't a waste.
