Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan

Praise, for one of the most elegant uses of multiple timelines I have seen in fantasy

The sequel is better... suited to my taste. Constant shifts bring about unorthodox character pairings/conflicts, while bringing previously underrated characters(Lyrna, Frentis, to name a few) into an unexpected new perspective.

It is nonetheless a sequel, working with an established readership, as it dares to sacrifice the final mash-up of gory glory (now just gory) to make place for poignant and significant moments within each chapter, that, much in the way of chess (or Keschet, if you will) grow to become necessary structural improvements to the story as the story flows, without the commonly encountered drone/endless-narration/new-plot-holes-leading-to-further-dispersion.

This being said, the book ends in a bit of a cliffhanger. To Mr. [a:Anthony Ryan|5804101|Anthony Ryan|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1361298283p2/5804101.jpg], that is poor form. As a rule of the thumb, I believe one should avoid anything that could bear resemblance to a soap opera.
