American Tabloid by James Ellroy

The mob killed JFK because of the failed Bay of Pigs invasion? Perhaps.

This book is a detailed fiction of the main players at that time. Three fictional characters are superimposed onto that world. Through them we inhabit the world of the mob, the CIA and FBI. Much of it is believable if overwrought.

If there’s one criticism it’s that the end was too short. Having spent hundreds of pages on the ins and outs of anti-Castro training camps the final months of 1963 was barely a sketch.
