Honestly a bit of a let down and overall meh. I bought the book on release and only now had the opportunity to read it; it won’t make my forever shelf.

It was like a Hallmark movie set in the 1800s but not quite right. It would have been better as a modern retelling than making attempts at a historical setting.

The characters were caricatures of the originals and I didn’t feel engaged or endeared towards them. Text from Pride & Prejudice were shoe horned in, key events were forced. Elizabeth and Darcy certainly had no connection or chemistry. It was like the author knew they were prideful (both), standoffish (Elizabeth) or shy (Darcy) in the original and that they needed to ultimately get together but there was no journey from A to B.

Don’t get me started on Catherine De Bourgh! Had the author seen Lena Headey’s portrayal in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and thought “ah ha! She would make an excellent xxxxxx!” I agree. But that’s a different sapphic story entirely that I need in my life.
