A Path Begins by J.A. White

4.0

A great example of a book I would have loved as a kid while it also gave me nightmares. As it stands, I was really sucked in by the dark and creepy world of Thickety right from the beginning. Kara is a strong and likeable heroine that's really easy to get behind.

The creatures and magic of Thickety, as well as the frightening hatred the townspeople have of everything magical (to the point of feeling like a kind of cult, especially with how isolated they are), were all eerie in their own ways. Right off Kara is confronted with a pretty horrible monster as well as personal tragedy, which sets the tone for the entire book. Definitely not for the easily spooked.
