You Know Where to Find Me by Rachel Cohn

3.0

it's a bad summer. miles' cousin and on-again-off-again best friend, laura, has committed suicide. miles' other best friend, jamal, is leaving town in the fall, and has a new girlfriend. miles' mom, mel, has gone to europe to be with her boyfriend. miles' annoying father, buddy, has shown up to keep an eye on her in the carriage house behind the estate that laura lived in with her father jim.

miles copes with all these changes by eating, smoking, and taking pills. she's overweight, in a stupor, miserable, angry at laura, angry at jamal.

miles is an extremely realistic and extremely frustrating main character. she's smart- even brilliant- clever, and cares deeply for her friends and her community. but she loathes herself, and treats herself like crap. she desperately wants to change- but won't. can't?

i spent most of the book yelling at her to talk to someone: jamal, jim, jamal's mom, jamal's sister, her dad, someone...and in the end miles does yell for help, and some changes are made. small changes. but they're enough.

a heartbreakingly real portrayal of a girl in pain. definitely not a good-time read.
