The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5.0

*4.5*

This was so SO GOOD, I just finished it and there are so many thoughts and feelings I can't even process them all fast enough!

Monique Grant was suddenly summoned into her boss's office one day and was told the famous Hollywood star, Evelyn Hugo, wanted to meet with her. Turns out Evelyn wants her to write a biography about her life story. Throughout the book, we learn about Evelyn's life and Monique's, and towards the end of the story, we learn about the connection between the two.

The book switches between Monique and Evelyn's points of view, a few chapters will be from Evelyn's POV, and then there'll be one chapter from Monique's POV, then it switches back to Evelyn. There are separate sections about each of Evelyn's husbands, it's a really fun format that I really enjoyed.

The book talks about a lot of heavy topics, such as sexism, racism, homophobia, and abuse. Evelyn's story is set in the 1900s, and a lot of things were different back then, I felt as though I stepped into a whole new era.

I think this book has a lot of really good messages in it, and a lot of amazing quotes as well. I definitely learned a lot, but one thing particularly stuck out to me: There are always two sides to every story

During the second chapter of the story, we see Monique doing research about Evelyn, and she sort of summarizes what she found. Throughout the book, I kept finding myself flipping back to that page, and thinking so THAT'S what that's about.. The truth turns out to be completely different from what Monique originally had in mind. I think that's a great lesson this book teaches, you never truly know what someone's going through.

Another thing this book touches on is the price of fame. Evelyn's story is a heartbreaking one because she was famous, she could never be who she truly was, or be with who she truly loved because it would've been a scandal and it would've ruined her life as an actress. I think at least a few of us have once dreamed of stardom and fame, but it's not as amazing or glamorous as celebrities on social media make it out to be.

-"There's Evelyn Hugo for you. Somewhere in the middle."
Evelyn is such a complicated and complex character, and I loved her for it. She's calculative and clever. She knew what she wanted, and knew what she had to do to accomplish it, she would, most of the time, seize the opportunity if she knew it'd get her what she wants. She's a very well-written character and the author knew what they were doing.

*This last part will contain SPOILERS, STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE BOOK YET*

The romance between Evelyn and Cecil is SO SO GOOD, they've had to hide who they were for the longest time, some moments were cute and some were so sad, it tugged on my heartstrings. Harry is SO NICE I loved him so much! I'm so upset about what happened to him and Conner, my god, I feel so bad for Evelyn. And I definitely did not anticipate the part about Monique's father.

Also, Rex North is SO much nicer and so much better than what I had expected lol

SPOILERS OVER, you can continue reading now

I know this review is kinda all over the place, but I'm just trying to write down everything I think about this amazing book. The author did a great job, and this is spectacular. Although I didn't give it a full five stars, I definitely recommend reading it!
