My Government Means to Kill Me by Rasheed Newson

3.0

this novel pissed me off so many times and not in a good way. the writer tried to deal with so many different big topics in the book, but endsd up half-assing a lot of them. especially when it comes to race, it was the worst i thought, especially since it is written by a Black person. it felt like the way white people would write, in that they mention the role race plays into different aspect of people's lives, but then doss not go deeper into it and the main character, who is Black acts like white people would afterwards.

like what do u mean, u the main chactet see himself and other Black and POC protesters being singled out to be arrested and then u don't use that moment as a jump of for cditical look at the whites around u. the (only) Black friend of the main character says as much to the white man who was unharmed at the protest and there is no follow up on that? from a main character that is critical of everyone and everything?

there was definitely some good things about this novel, which is why I am giving it a 3, but damn, it was lacking in so many ways. i am glad I read this book together with a friend and i could vent most of my disappointments there, otherwise i definitely would not have finished it.
