Good-Bye, Chunky Rice by Craig Thompson

2.0

I think I'll start off with: I don't think this book was for me. It was not what I expected it to be ... at all. While I would personally give it 1 star, I think that's my own issues with the book, so I'll give it 2 stars.
This story, surrounding a turtle named Chunky Rice (adorable name) who loves a mouse named Dandel but is leaving them to travel the world. Chunky Rice must leave. Dandel must stay. No real reason is given as to why this has to be.
The supporting characters, Chunky Rice's roommate Solomon, Solomon's brother Chuck that is captain of the boat Chunky Rice is traveling on, Ruth and Livonia who are conjoined sisters traveling on this boat as well, all have a story of loss but none seem to be comparative in scope of the loss.
Solomon is the one standout of the story for me. We get backstory on him, we get a bit of plot on his current plight. He's an endearing character, with an interesting and at times hard-to-read accent/pattern of speech.
Trigger Warning: The backstory involving Solomon involves animal abuse. As this is a graphic novel, and this was told through images, I found this rather upsetting.
