The Narrow Road Between Desires by Patrick Rothfuss

3.0

Hm, this is a tough one. I have not read the lightening tree and am curious to now for the sake of comparison. I finished this book and felt pretty neutral, but the author’s note was honestly such a mess it left a bad taste in my mouth.

The story itself was beautiful prose, which is what attracts me to Rothfuss in the first place. However, it somehow felt simultaneously long winded and incomplete. It leaned too hard onto the lyrical writing and the attachment of the reader to the series as a whole, and the narrative at times slipped or felt forced. More importantly, after all the criticism the author has received for how he writes women I felt that this novella was the worst yet in that regard. It was disappointing not to see improvement there.

Still three stars for brilliant prose. It’s hard to imagine him earning less, even if he wrote about nothing. (Then again the author’s note might immediately prove me wrong.)
