The Puller by Michael Hodges

4.0

This is a brief version of the review. The full review can be found here on Sci-Fi & Scary.

The Puller is a solid debut work. Michael Hodges lays out his story with a pleasing steadiness. The slow-burn aspect of it put me off a bit at first and I was afraid it was going to drag on, but luckily things start picking up well before I hit the halfway point. It went from ‘a little creepy’ to ‘Okay, run now you idiot!’ with a swiftness I didn’t expect.

While The Pulleris a good man versus monster story, there’s definitely a moral to the story. One that will become clear as you read the story. It’s also obvious that Michael Hodges has a healthy respect and appreciation for nature. (As should everyone.) And I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. He ended the story at pretty much the perfect point, instead of belaboring it as so many authors do. Very well done, especially considering it’s a debut book.

Overall, well worth the read.
