I really loved how this story developed. At first, I was a little put off by the magical realism (it's just not my style) but I loved seeing the relationship between Lillian and the kids and her growing into a very unexpected role. Yes, there were some characters I hated but they were meant to be hated. 

The book is a little older but that was ok; it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book at all.
