Die Dog or Eat the Hatchet by Adam Howe

5.0

Three wonderful stories, each very different, other than the quality and expertise of the author. The first is a fast-paced story full of unforgettable characters and wonderful set pieces. The second is a fantastic slice of survival horror straight from a 70s style slasher movie, again full of some memorable characters. The third is a noirish tale of lust in depression-era USA and entails a piano player with two too-few fingers and an eye for the ladies who falls head over heels in lust with the wrong femme fatale, leading to an incredibly powerful finale.
Howe's writing skill is on display throughout the collection, with some brilliant character development, great layering and foreshadowing, and a knack for language and a turn of phrase that most writers would kill for. Overall it was incredibly great fun to read and I would highly recommend checking out this book and this author. I know I will be seeking more work by Adam Howe.
