Duke by Kirby Larson

3.0

Hobie's father is across the ocean as a fighter pilot in WWII. Americans on the home front are asked to do all they can to help with the war effort, but when Hobie is asked to volunteer his faithful German Shepherd Duke for duty, he doesn't know if he can handle giving up his dad AND his dog. But Hobie knows if his dad were here, he would ask him to be brave, and soon Hobie finds himself handing Duke over to Dogs for Defense.

I liked the story. I wish it had dug a little deeper emotionally, but I appreciated the short, quick read. This would be a great historical fiction for reluctant readers, World War II aficionados, and dog-lovers.
