Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins

3.0

I have absolutely no idea how to even begin to rate this book.

The first 6-7 chapters of this book read like an extended extremely boring prologue that should have stayed on the chopping wood floor so much so that I almost DNFed the book, I’m glad I didn’t but it was a close thing. We spent over 40 pages learning about people and relationships not relevant to the plot or that could’ve been and were integrated into the main narrative, it left the beginning of the novel and the rest feeling disjointed on top of not serving a narrative purpose. We didn’t need to spend that much time trying to build tension on whether or not she’s going to get to Ireland we know she does or else there wouldn’t be a story, there are no stakes nothing for me to get invested into I felt like I was being kept from the actual story.

Millie and Flora (and literally every character that we met when Millie arrived at school) oozed personality and watching them fall in love was so much fun which makes it even more upsetting that we didn’t get to meet her until about 20% in the book. And I can’t help but feel like that 20% should’ve instead been allocated to getting more moments between them as a couple or developing other relationships that actually did matter to the romance and to the plot.
