Pet Sounds by Jim Fusilli

5.0

Fusilli really gets this album; the tension between youth and maturity, the heights of joy and the rich vein of emotional pain and suffering that underlies every note. He goes even further in explaining beautifully why works of art like Pet Sounds are so important to people, but I think most of us know why already.

The effect of Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug abuse on his work is well-discussed elsewhere, but the root of his pain is not always appreciated. It included physical and emotional abuse, but it was not limited to those causes. Wilson was always reaching in vain for lost innocence, for peace of mind and a kind of assurance that love could really be as pure and beautiful as the harmonies of music. His search is the same, I believe, as with most sensitive people.
