Black Stone Heart
by Michael R. Fletcher
This was easily my favorite read of 2021. While I've never read much grimdark this was phenomenal. Fletcher has built a rich world locked behind an erased history, learning bits and pieces as we go along with the protagonist. His take on demons and magic is unique and refreshing, it doesn't get overly complicated. The plot is simple, but I don't mean that in a bad way. The best plots are simple and straight-forward; it's the execution that really counts. And he did a great job with that. I might even jump straight into book 2, which isn't something I normally do with fantasy series.
