Betrayal
by Aleatha Romig
You know that moment, when you realize you are into a story for the LONG haul. Well it just hit me. I just realized there are four books in this series and it’s likely Betrayal quite hasn’t scratched the surface to the mystery of Nox. I fear it may be a grueling wait - Just what is that man about??
In the first part of the Infidelity series, Alexandra (Alex) Collins is front and center. When we first meet her, she’s returning to her ancestral home but not with any familial longing. There is a strong sense of foreboding as this refined southern belle is clearly returning “home” under duress. So we are left to figure out just why this is. Told entirely through Alex’s point of view, we traverse between two locations; Alex at her family home and Alex where she’d rather be - six weeks in the past and experiencing her first authentic feelings of sensuality and longing when she meets the mysterious Nox.
My initial reaction to Alex was delightfully unexpected. It took awhile for me to warm up to her. I was completely intrigued by the circumstances in the “Present”, by her dysfunctional family and discovering how her future was about to change. It’s a bit counter-intuitive considering the genre but Alex’s battles at home made Betrayal a wonderful mystery/suspense read. This Alex was the one I was excited to follow. That’s not to say that Alex, six weeks in the “Past” wasn’t interesting. Oh no, Nox made sure it was. I just became preoccupied by the present and tried and tried to guess just how the circumstances she faced would collide with the Alex from six weeks prior. The Alex we see on vacation isn’t at all who she really is. It’s not as though she’s trying to be conniving or deceptive, she’s just adhering to the rules. Alex becomes Charli and voilà, the entitled college grad is part of a sensual alpha man’s cocoon and clearly in way over her head.
Nox remains an enigma. We know SO Little of him. It wasn’t enough for me but it made for a was a great set-up. We are never privy to his thoughts and so EVERYTHING about him is a mystery. I’m surprised I was content with it. Well at least I WAS. The mystery of Nox’s “Rules” was maddening, but I was content to let it be. After all, what choice did I have? So, right up until the very end of their time together, I simply enjoyed the mystery of Nox. That changed in a flash. Now? Now I crave information on Nox. What I do know is that he can be utterly romantic:
“When our eyes met, his lips curled into his sexy smile. “I don’t have the words,” he said. “Amazing seems woefully insufficient.”, and amazingly sensual: “That was what Nox did: he worshiped, adoring my body - every inch. Beginning at my ankles…”. I guess if we are left with knowing so little of Nox, we get the best parts.
Betrayal is a clever read that is executed to perfection. I’m still mulling over the implications and the predicament that Alex is in and believe Cunning ( Infidelity Book #2) is already one of my most anticipated releases for 2016. Mostly though, I just want more Nox.
More Nox! More Nox! More Nox! More Nox! More Nox! More Nox! More Nox! More Nox! More...
5 stars and my recommendation!
