Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982

5 out of 5 stars
"Kim Ji Young is every woman" is the blurb from the back cover of the book that sticks out to me the most because Kim Ji Young IS every woman. Her experiences are so universal that reading some parts of the book reminded me of myself, my mom, my grandmother, my female friends and it made my heart twinge. Its a really short book but I couldn't finish it at one go because I'd simply get upset and angry reading it, especially nearing the end where my eyes watered with sympathy and anger.
One of the little things I really enjoyed about the book is all the support the women had for each other. In every single chapter of the book was acts of services, love and support being passed down from woman to woman in the face of injustices they faced due to their gender. Ji Young's mom protected and supported her daughters, the random woman on the bus who helped Ji Young, Ji Young's boss and female work colleagues, the ice cream clerk etc. Its just a lovely touch and a beautiful message for the book to show how much comradery there is between women because they've all been there and they want to help other women going through the same thing be BETTER. I also just came out of "If I had your face by Frances Ha" a while ago which had an angry boss woman with internalized misogyny so I heaved a sigh of relief when Ji Young's boss was extremely kind and warm towards her.
An amazing book that I think EVERYONE should read. Those who have felt like this will feel comforted and angered by the experience and those who've never experienced it can understand the hardships of being a woman.
