A Dry White Season by André Brink

4.0

A powerful and harrowing novel; Kafka in the real world.
This is the story of the story of Ben Du Toit, a white man in South Africa in the 1970s as encounters and realizes the full extent of the racism both individual and institutional that was present at that time. Ben's undying optimism keep the tone from becoming completely bleak, but this still is not a particularly easy read for obvious reasons.
Moving and passionate narration, intense subject matter; this is definitely an impactful book.
Presumably this makes me a weak person but I now have an overwhelming desire to read a fluffy, meaningless fantasy caper; where's some Terry Brooks...
