Dog Man Unleashed by Dav Pilkey

3.0

Dog Man is sent to the pet store to pick up a fish for his chief’s birthday, but he has no money and makes a mess of the store, so the owners give him an evil fish for free. At the same time, Petey the cat is in jail but wants to find who his imposter is that is stealing, so he breaks out by using a paper decoy of himself. The decoy gets living spray used on it, is even more evil than Petey, and commands a dinosaur alive and tries to steal the treasure tank regular Petey made. Dog Man eventually saves the day, and it turns out the imposter was actually the evil fish.

I was not impressed for the first twenty pages or so. I didn’t like the font, as I thought it would be harder for kids to read because it is so inconsistent. However, I actually got into how ridiculously silly this book was…it was actually pretty funny. It is very elementary in terms of illustrations and content, but I think it could appeal to up to middle schoolers. It would be a good transitional book. Also, I really enjoyed the interactive “flip-o-ram” element…that is super cute, and it is a great way to keep kids engaged. There are drawing tutorials at the end of the book, as well as information about an app and website to interact more on, which is a great extension of the book.
