Dangerous Deception by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl

4.0

Once upon a time there was a girl who had finished Twilight and all of a sudden stumbled over a book called "beautiful creatures". The cover was amazing and it turned out, so was the story. The series was Twilight, but then better. It was the first real book addiction I had, the first series I roleplayed for and the first real bookcrush I had that I can remember. It was maybe also the first bigger fandom I became a part of.

And yet, I never read the last book from Ridley en Link. But today I changed that. And halfway I wasn't sure yet what to think about the book, but about 50 pages before the end I started to realise where this was going (or better said: where this was not going) and all of a sudden my respect for the authors and the story grew.

For a big part this book was a lovely trip down memory lane. It has been a while since I read the original four books and it was amazing to see Liv and John and Amma back. I felt the smile on my face growing and the longing to re-read the books with it. Ethan and Lena were of course only mentioned and not in it (they would steal the spotlight), but the authors gave a very good reason for it and I loved that!

I was also once again positively surprised by the writing style and how much I loved it. It's so natural and flowing and nice. It has something that feels real and not just lyrical or beautifully written. It really fits the characters, their world and their ways of thinking and acting.

And then the plot. Like I said, at the beginning I was wondering a little where this would go and if I really liked that, but the closer I came to the end the more I started to realise what kind of story I'd actually been reading and then all of a sudden I was in awe. It's surprising, heart breaking and yet also really fitting. It fits Ridley, it fits Link and it leaves room for possible other stories and one day maybe a sequel.

But if there will never be a sequel, I still think this is one of my favorite series of all time. Even though the ending broke me.
