To Dance: A Ballerina's Graphic Novel by Mark Siegel, Siena Cherson Siegel

3.0

To Dance is a nostalgic autobiography of Siena Cherson Siegel's years training to be a ballerina. Siegel is a likeable and introspective narrator, recalling her fascination and enthusiasm for her dance classes. The text is spare, permitting the impressionistic, rough-edged illustrations to speak to Siegel's surroundings and dancing.
The plot sweeps through her childhood through Siegel's early twenties. Still, the end feels rushed and incomplete. Given the reflection throughout the memoir, a conclusion or return to a pivotal moment would have made for a more satisfying end.
Recommended to young dancers, who will enjoy the inside view of the School of American Ballet.
