I'm in love with the novel by Jemisin. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't have a satisfying ending since it's the 1st book in the series, but this could definitely be read as it's own stand alone novel- which is good since there isn't a sequel yet.
The novel follows the birth of New York as a true living city, and it's subsequent battle for existance against a Lovecraftian creature from another reality. The characters in the story, avatars for the parts of the city they represent, are well written, each with their own back stories, flaws, and assets.
