The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

5.0

Lin is the daughter of the emperor, and yet not. Having lost plenty of her memories to an illness she's fighting to cement her place as heir through earning keys to the palace's doors and to the skill only emperors have: building magical constructs powered by the life force of the empire's citizens. Jorvis is fleeing both from an organized crime empire and the empire itself while desperately seeking his kidnapped wife. He crosses paths with a strange creature that will change his life drastically. Phalue is doing her best to convince her lover to marry her. Being the governor's heir isn't helpful in this, mostly because the governor is terribly wasteful with his money and Phalue's lover is very concerned about how this affects the people he governs. This is one of those books that, when I was halfway through, I had to go get the rest of the series because I had so many questions I needed answers to (in a good way)! In short, it's an engaging tale. The main characters start out at different points both geographically, socially and mentally, and by the end it all comes together in a weave of plot threads that makes you shout, "A-HA!" and "I AM HAVING EMOTIONS!" Also, the setting is a human civilization that lives on migrating clusters of islands with hints of hidden history, so that's an extra plus to me.

Recommended reading! I'm off to start on book 2 :)
