I spent so long reading this book in part because I really could not tell how I felt about it until I was finished with it! Altogether, not my favorite book, but not bad? It is part of a trilogy so I can see where there are questions left by the end.

THE GOOD: I really liked the world building here, especially the ideas of saints and prophecies and magic and its influence over a kingdom sort of "after the age of" angels and demons etc. Honestly, I would've loved to see more of that! While we as the readers were introduced to quite a pantheon, I wasn't certain what the rules were especially regarding angels and the darkness/taboo ideas that surrounded them, but I did like the idea that they had a negative influence, as that's a pretty different take then other books with similar mythos have shown!

THE BAD: To be entirely honest, the back-and-forth between past and present confused me a little bit, and made my reading process a lot slower than it would be normally. I understand the purpose of this was to draw parallels between mother and daughter, but because sometimes the chapters ended on an action-oriented note, it was difficult to keep up? I also wasn't particularly attached to any of the characters, Rielle and Eliana felt like very much the same person even as two different characters (which, again, may be more parallels!). It also took me a weird amount of time to make the connection with Simon, but again, the back-and-forth every chapter between mother and daughter threw me for an unexpected loop.

Ultimately, if you're looking for a pretty faced past adventure, this could be your book!
