This whole series has so much more emotional depth than I realized at first!

My kid is a Frozen fan who fell in love with this series at first sight; but I remember when I was plodding through the first chapters of the first book, my internalized misogyny was ready to write Princess Lina off as "silly." I'm so glad that I kept reading long enough to fall under the spell of this stubborn, smart, unapologetically femme, humanly flawed, somewhat spoiled, but very loveable ice princess. I want to see this early chapter book series on all of the library shelves.

In this particular book, I particularly liked the miscommunication between Lina and her best friend, Claudia, about Claudia's first sleepover at Lina's house. Lina kept worrying that maybe the sleepover fun was inadequate, so she kept pushing Claudia to participate in rules-breaking ice magic fun; but ultimately it turned out that Claudia had just been feeling homesick and all of the getting-in-trouble-for-ice-magic had been totally unhelpful.

For adults wishing to plan ahead: the project in the back of this book is an "ice votive"; it calls for a plastic cup (or something similar) to freeze water in, and also calls for a small battery-operated votive candle. (I think adults who were OK with supervising flame could probably also substitute a real votive candle, but battery-operated would have the advantage of not melting the ice so quickly.) Also calls for optional food coloring, glitter, etc.
