Call of the Night, Vol. 1
by Kotoyama
This manga was completely not what I was expecting. The story follows a boy who has dropped out of school and has insomnia so takes to wandering the streets at night. While doing this he meets a vampire, as mentioned in the blurb, which led me to think the story would have a bit of a fantasy/supernatural element to it. However, the fact that she is a vampire is completely irrelevant to the story. The focus is really an exploration of Ko's feelings and how he ended up in the state he is currently. It almost ends up being an interesting slice of life style story, with a fairly realistic view of life as a depressed teenager.
The art style in interesting and quite different to the manga I usually read. It is all harsh lines and sharp corners, which actually fits with the story and adds to the atmosphere of the book.
Overall, this was an interesting read, although not what I expected, but I am not sure I'm in a hurry to read any further volumes.
