Sisters by Daisy Johnson

3.0

After reading Daisy Johnson’s rather wonderful Everything Under . I declared myself a fan and decided I would read anything published with her name on it (I’ve read Fen as well). Sisters is her latest novel. The sisters of the title are September and July. September is the older one by ten months and is dominant sibling. In fact July, who narrates most of the book is more a lackey to September’s sometimes unreasonable demands. Nonetheless there is a strong bond. After an incident between some school bullies (we are given bits and pieces of this), the girls, and their mother move to their deceased father’s childhood home in Yorkshire : A creaky, creepy structure infused with many memories surrounded by an equally harsh and cruel environment. As both September and July start venturing out to meet people, their problems increase and July finds herself cast in a situation that’s more uncomfortable than the ones that September has put her in. I have tried to keep things short and superficial as Sisters moves in an unpredictable way. At the same time the book is essentially a psychological horror novel in the vein of Shirley Jackson. What I mean is that the reader will not be scared but there is a high creep factor which builds up to a good pay off. I liked it but I did feel there could have bit more.
