Good Rosie! by Kate DiCamillo

3.0

I thought the comic book style early reader format was interesting. But I dislike the size of the book because it makes me want to place it in picture books although it is broken in to tiny chapters which would normally want to make me file it in early reader but the size is too big.

I’m not a huge DiCamillo fan (except for Mercy Watson) so I sort of go in to everything of hers expecting their to be some depressing themes. Yep. I feel bad for poor lonely Rosie who just wants a friend and can’t seem to find one. I was a little disgruntled by the dog park scene where the St Bernard picks up the Chihuahua and shakes it is his mouth. I think that could be a little traumatic for kids.

The illustrations were nice. The storyline was boring. Then a bit traumatizing. Then so-so with some conflict resolution ... sort of? Or just the idea for little kids that you can just go up and say you want to be friends and it magically happens. Probably appropriate method though for Pre-K-2 before peer issues and self-consciousness become more prevalent.
