Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol

5.0

Brilliant! Witty and sardonic with gems of wisdom throughout. The commentary on contemporary Russian society is so relatable that it goes beyond just being a Russian story about Russian lives — this is a story about the state of a soul, the states of all our souls. There are a lot of themes like disillusionment and inefficacy and what it really means to be alive and who deserves to live generally and more specifically who deserves to live like in luxury versus in squalor. Who should be respected and who should be powerful. And why sometimes we strive for the wrong things in life and end up deader for it.

I just wish the ending were more finished because I wanted more resolution... but I understand, sometimes there are things that are lost and we just have to work with what we have.
