Giant Days: Extra Credit by John Allison

4.0

Ok! So this is a collection of shorts from different illustrators & like most collections some of them are amazing and some of them are less so.

The first story is great! Its a 'what if' story if Ester, Susan, & Daisy had not become friends in that first week of school. I really liked this glimpse into what could have been &the art is classic Giant Days so it's perfect.

The next short is a bit weird & pulls in a character from Allison's earlier work Scary Go Round (which I read obsessively online for years & loved, but I know many people who read Giant Days have not). The story is short, the illustration style strange, & it just doesn't work that well.

The next story also prominently features a Scary Go Round character, Shelley Winters. The story has a cute romance-y shenanigans & the girls plotting together, plus Jenn St-Ongle's amazing art (it's not something I think would work all the time here, but it is quite lovely) so it's definitely a win, but you'll enjoy it more if you've read Scary Go Round.

Next there's a bit that Allison illustrated where the girls get into some food & music based shenanigans. cute stuff.

& finally we have a bit of classic Scary Go Round shenanigans (John Allison illustrating, of course) with Shelley discovering the secrets of her job.

Over all, If you've read all of John Allison's work you'll love the throw back bits & the stories. If you're only here for Giant Days you might be confused/disappointed with some of these stories.
