Unicorns,  griffins, jackalopes, and a Pegasus,  along with a number of other creatures,  populate the land where Rowan and her royal family live. She has been raised to be queen after her mother,  but yearns to be the royal monster hunter like her aunt. When given a chance to prove that she has what it takes,  12 year old Rowan enthusiastically takes on the challenge.
Rowan is a multifaceted heroine in a well drawn world. I have read Armstrong's adult fiction,  and she brings her A game to this middle grade tale.
