Alexander's book is rather a lot like an Irish version of Call the Midwife: All-Nun Edition or The Nun Story (Lite): The Fallen Woman. It has some drastically emo portions and is garment-rending with its depiction of teenage drama and friendships. Lots of forged-under-pressure storytelling.
