Hunger by Knut Hamsun

4.0

The book is summed up in its one word title: Hunger. Everything you need to know about the state of abject hunger. It must be autobiographical, how else could he have given us such a profound insight into the sheer hell of going hungry? This is the semi permanent state of the central character and narrator. He seeks to make a “living” by writing articles for newspapers but he is light headed much of the time due to his hunger. He seeks to hold on to his self respect at great cost.

So powerful: the author has induced me to fast! That way I can better appreciate at least some of what is related here. I can also try to look those poor starving kids in Gaza in their bulging eyes.

Not a barrel of laughs!
