Divorce Is the Worst by Anastasia Higginbotham

3.0

I really liked the illustrative style. I also thought the different reactions were very honest and realistic. I wasn't sure, though, what age audience this would be best for, or at what stage in divorce talk that this would make the most sense. These books are hard, because I definitely understand that fear of introducing ideas/worries that kids didn't have previously. Like mentioning a parent's special friend; for parents where that is nowhere on the table, I think it could give the kids a new worry. Or the spread about their parents possibly buying them expensive gifts- that's probably true for some, but makes it a little weird for those where it isn't an issue.

The art exercise in the back is a really neat one, and I can see it working best for probably 5th-8th graders. It's just a tricky topic- and even if not for kids, I might recommend it for parents worried about/wondering how to broach the topic and what to expect.
