Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien
4.0

I'm not too sure what I expected when I first came to this book.  Maybe something along the lines of Redwall?  And all I knew about Redwall was the little information I heard about it from my 5th grade crush.  So coming into this, I didn't really know what to expect.

What I got was the tale of a mother who would do anything for her children, a brave widow, a mouse who put herself in the line of danger to save her babies.  I also got a narrative on why animal testing is bad, how smart rats and mice really are, and how bad humans can be either intentionally or unintentionally.  Which, hey, all of these to me sound fantastic, and they are fantastic.  Mrs. Frisby is an easily lovable book, and I can see now why so many children in late elementary school and middle school enjoy this book, and why it's withstood the test of time so well.

Additionally, the illustrations were so well done and really helped the story come together, especially as we delved down deep into the tunnels built by the rats of NIMH and as they explain their plans.  This was a really nice book, and I'm glad to have finally read it.
