In general, I'm not a big fan of the ammesia trope, as it often feels too convenient and too forced. And that sadly is also the case here. That whole part is totally unnecessary and didn't do anything for the overall storyline. 
Also, you could have easily made three books out of all the plot that was (forcefully) put into this. Could have easily done with skipping Japan imho.
