Fangirl, Vol. 1: The Manga by Rainbow Rowell, Gabi Nam, Sam Maggs
2.0

12/10 do not recommend.
8.5/10 recommend reading the actual book of Fangirl.

This manga version of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell was so incredibly disappointing I honestly cannot believe it.

I’m a fan of the original book and even the Carry On series and I was let down by this manga.

I found that the story was so chopped up and didn’t make much sense at all. It’s been a couple years since I’ve read the book and I can’t even imagine what it would be like for someone to be introduced to this story and it’s character through this manga. I know this story and I was having a tough time following along. It jumped from scene to scene, from place to place, from story to story, from emotion to emotion without any purpose or real flow. I’ve read a few graphic novels before, I don’t read them often, but I’ve read enough to know that this isn’t a manga/graphic novel thing. This is them just trying to fit the story into pictures and I personally think they did a terrible job at it.

All the characters, minus our sweet baby Levi, seem so much angrier, meaner, grouchier, and bitchier in this story. I don’t know if it was the way their facial expressions were drawn or the words they chose to go with those expression but I didn’t like/gravitate to any of the characters except for Levi like I did when reading the actual book.

I’m giving it 2 stars solely for the artist who drew everything because I did love the art style for this manga!! The only saving grace for me.

I really don’t suggest you spend money on this book. And it kills me to say that, it really does. If you really wanna read it, see if your local library has it. Tbh you could probably read this in 30 minutes...I was trying to make it last as long as I could because I paid for the book but I was so over the annoying, jumpy-ness I just had to finish it.
