I really liked this book, and I love that this series takes place in the same world and time and some of the characters overlap, but you don't necessarily have to read the previous book in order to know what is going on. My only complaint in this book is that the motivations of the characters is not entirely believable. During the Civil War a Southern white woman and an ex-slave are not going to trust each other and become friends as fast as Belle and the captain did. The relationship just progressed too quickly for it to be realistic in my opinion. It was a fun and exciting story, just not as well put together as Boneshaker was.
