Flayed Corpse and Other Stories by Josh Simmons

4.0

I dig it! Some of the stories skeeve me out, but I don't particularly mind that skin-crawly feeling.

As I've mentioned in another review of Josh Simmons's work, I like his unique blend of lush, detailed illustrations and pitch-black storytelling, and the stories in Flayed Corpse perfectly encapsulate this combination.

And there's an amazing balance between gratuity and restraint. Some stories are built on the grossest, most scatological premises, but such extremity doesn't distract from the snapshot being displayed. Likewise, stories that could develop into really brutal, gruesome scenes end before any sort of violent conflict takes place, leaving the results up to the reader's imagination.

This is an extreme collection, full of nervous, awkward laughter and uneasy feeling in one's stomach. But if you're into extremity, I'd definitely recommend it.
