These are good erotica. They are not great, but they are good and entertaining. This one is NOT a standalone at all. They may not classify this first as erotica but they definitely have more sex and more descriptive sex than the Laurann Dohner New Species series, so most are going to put this as erotica. I classify it Erotic Scifi.

In the other books, we might see some of the old characters at the end, but in this one, we get right back into their lives and sex. I almost think that this was to put some extra sex scenes in there. OK, it did work with the story (except the sex scenes) but it made this contingent on the books in front of it. This is the first that this is the case.

So my biggest complain was that I was a bit bored with the old characters sex scenes. The daily life was interesting and one scene I though pretty fun but mostly they were tiring. Maybe Brooks did this because the main characters are very slow to go in that direction and don't hook up until the second half of the book. In the preceding books, the sex starts rather fast so maybe she wanted to appease her audience. I would've enjoyed the story more if she just skipped Cat & Jack's sex, it dragged. Also she repeats herself in this one a lot, talking about emotions and questioning the others reasons and actions, reading through that was tiring at the end (that is where it repeats). Still after reading through the boring parts, you get a pretty good story and still pretty good sex, although that is becoming a little repetitive from book to book.
