Thank you Sourcebook Fire for the ARC!

I really wanted to like this book, and I think I liked it more than I want to admit, but I'm just so annoyed with Mona I can't be objective. She was a hot-mess unreliable narrator, and those are not my favorite books. It did get under my skin, though, so that's something.

Mona is on a mission to solve a cold case disappearance to enhance her podcast ratings. She drives off in the middle of the night with a new identity and a over-ambitious plan. Her journey leads her to meet some truly kind people, people who definitely don't deserve the way she treats them, and gets in over her head on the case almost immediately. The narrative is very dreamy and alluring, with mediations on living and dying that seem beyond Mona's 17 years. But, it's also manic and spun-out and a little confusing. And I get that's what's going on in her head. I just didn't want to be there.

I enjoyed the mystery, even if I suspected the twist early on--or maybe it wasn't a twist. Maybe it was supposed to be obvious to everyone but the one person who was there. I really do hope Mona gets her act together.
