Three Jacobean Tragedies: The White Devil; The Revenger's Tragedy; The Changeling
by John Webster, Thomas Middleton, Cyril Tourneur, Gamini Salgado, William Rowley
To a novice reader of Jacobean drama, this was astonishing at every turn. Macabre and savagely satirical, it gleefully heaps up absurdities and extremities of conduct. It also made me wonder why, in our own age of hypocrisy and excess, we don't have more productions of revenge tragedies.
