Love the One You're With by Emily Giffin

2.0

I selected this as my pick for the 2018 PopSugar Ultimate Reading Challenge advanced prompt "a book that was being read by a stranger in a public place." While I had a couple of other options to choose from, I decided to pick this one since it was the first title that I found for it this year and this was outside of my normal reading fare.

When I first starting reading it, I thought the story showed potential and was pleasantly surprised; the writing seemed engaging and I was curious to find out what was going to happen. However, the more I read, the less I liked it. The main character's decisions drove me absolutely insane. In addition, the more I got to know almost all of the characters, the less I liked them. I almost felt like they became more flat as the story progressed. I felt like the ending was completely unrealistic and I really didn't care. So much of the plot could have been avoided if the main character had just spoken up to her sister (OR her best friend OR her husband!) the first time she was presented with the situation that drove the entire story! This would've seemed like a cliched, mid-life crisis plot if not for the fact that the main characters were 20-somethings in their first year of marriage!! The only reason I settled on a 2-star rating was because of the reader's guide questions and the fact that I did think about this one long after I finished it. That's got to count for something, right? I finished it because I was using it for a challenge prompt, but likely would've abandoned it if I'd picked it up on a whim.
