Most books of this sort of Post Post Apocalyptic genre, when they end up making people almost like early American settlers again, they whitewash everything. This managed to not do that, allowed people to still be diverse and didn't make a big deal out of it. People were from different places and backgrounds, but they were just people fighting monsters and struggling to survive. It was refreshing to see that.
