The main cop is a bit bumbling but he gets the job done. The story has two deaths, one is found in an area where a war reenactment had taken place and the other is of a man who at first is thought to be homeless. The man is then identified as a professor who had taken part in the reenactment. It takes a while to identify the first body, that of a woman from a foreign country and to tie the two cases together.
One of the police officers gets shot, one joins the reenactors, and there is a connection with the local preservation society and horse racing.
