The Book of Kings by Cynthia Voigt, Iacopo Bruno

2.0

It's hard for me to confess this series does nothing for me. I love Cynthia Voigt and my eldest kid likes these books very much. I read them to check if they were clean, etc., otherwise, I would never have finished them.

I can't quite pinpoint why the Mister Max books fall flat for me. There's a lot of headhopping, and a lot of wandering from one event to another. There's telling, not showing. But there seems to be more to my dislike than that. Maybe it's all the intentional references to acting, directing, and the stage? Or the setting, which is half-fantasy, and half-real, but it's never clear which is which?

The books are almost entirely clean. There are lots of adventures of the types that appeal to kids 9 to 14. I'm just not sure how many adults will go for Mister Max.
