Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire

dark reflective tense medium-paced

3.5

Enjoyed this better than I expected, despite a weaker family backstory than other characters in the series, and  being terribly sold on Jack and Jill. They’re well-balanced in the setting, though Jack’s agency makes the story gravitate her way more often. The world came to life with unexpected solidity and shows that not only do strange children (neglected, neurodivergent) find doors to escape to and remake home in, but they’re also deeply shaped by their experiences on another plane. I’m glad I have this part of the picture.
